Moisturizing for the Winter Season

The joys of the holidays bring us Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and other festive occasions. With the festivities come hard weather, rough winds, snow, sleet, rain, and sometimes Mother Nature’s fury. These conditions could greatly affect your hair by transforming it into the Sahara Desert. So I cannot stress enough how moisturizing is essential for natural hair. I don’t believe you have to do much to keep your hair beautiful and lush.

Here are some pointers in keeping winter tresses looking great past New Year’s and into the spring. Not every routine will work for everyone – so find what works best for you and tweak it to your needs.

(Products I use are the SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus line which include: Curl & Shine Shampoo, Curl & Style Milk, and Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I deep condition with the Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque. I also use raw Shea butter mixed with coconut oil to apply to my ends and edges.)
1. Shampoo once a week (some may wash every other but since I run 5-6 times a week, washing it twice a month will bring out aromas of funk rather than those of sweet, smelling baked goods). Divide hair into two – left and right. Wash each section thoroughly one at a time. Gathering your hair at the top of your head and scrubbing creates tangles and knots which will lead to tearing and breaking hair when detangling.
2. Condition. What I love about the conditioner I use is that you can also use it as a deep conditioner. If so, apply and leave on for 15 minutes. Continue with your shower routine. Want a deeper treatment? Hop out of the shower (w/ conditioner), slip on a plastic cap, and put on heating cap for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Hair will feel smooth and very easy to comb through.
3. Moisturize. Blot hair; DO NOT RUB TOWEL-DRY. This will create tangles and knots. Comb hair into 4 sections. Apply moisturizer (Curl & Style Milk). Starting w/ one section create 5-6 twists. Seal ends with Shea butter coconut mix. Continue until whole head is done.
4. Air dry. If rushed, use hooded dryer on low setting.
5. Style. Once dry, I pin all twists into a ponytail if I am going to be out and about. If not, I slip on my silk scarf and call it day.
6. Next day, I either keep hair in ponytail twist or untwist all and finger comb my hair. No muss, no fuss!

I re-twist once in the middle of the week, moisturize every other day, and apply my Shea butter coconut mix to my edges every night. I always make sure that I sleep with my satin scarf and a must to prevent frizz: KEEP MY HANDS AWAY FROM MY HAIR!

Remember when it comes to keeping your tresses frizz free and lovely – less is definitely more!
